The City of Walnut is proud to offer quality swimming instruction at Walnut High School (pending announcement of pool closure, in which case a limited number of lessons will be held at Diamond Bar High School). There are a wide range of swimming lessons and programs that are offered to all ages in all levels of ability. The aquatics program officially opens in early June and closes in mid- August.

Important Aquatic Policies
  • The City of Walnut Recreation Services reserves the right to cancel any class that falls below the minimum required enrollment.
  • Pool Closure: Occasionally the pool may have forced closures due to unexpected accidents or inclement weather. Staff will do it’s best to inform participants immediately of all closures. In the event of a pool closure, you will be given the opportunity to make up the missed lesson as soon as possible.
  • Smog Policy: The South Coast Air Quality Management team states that all strenuous physical activities which require mouth breathing should be discontinued with 1st stage smog alerts. The City of Walnut Community Services will strictly adhere to this policy and close the swimming program at any time there is a 1st stage smog alert.
  • Refund Policy: There will be a $10 service charge per class per person on ALL REQUESTED REFUNDS AND TRANSFERS. Refunds will only be considered if requested seven days in advance of the first class meeting. ABSOLUTELY NO REFUNDS WILL BE GRANTED AFTER THAT TIME UNLESS INITIATED BY THE DEPARTMENT.

Swim Lessons
The City of Walnut offers a wide range of quality swimming lessons and programs for all ages and levels of ability at Walnut High School.
All swimming lessons are taught by certified American Red Cross Water Safety instructors, who are also certified in CPR for the Professional Rescuer. The American Red Cross “Learn to Swim” program provides instruction to help swimmers of all ages and abilities develop their swimming and water safety skills.

Day Lessons
Day lessons are offered Monday through Friday and are 30 minutes each day. Classes begin at 9:15 am and continue approximately every 30 minutes until 12:05 pm. There are five, two-week sessions offered beginning on the following dates:

Evening Lessons
Evening lessons are also available for adults and children of all abilities and are divided into two groups. Lessons are 30 minutes.

Group I will meet on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday for three weeks. Lessons will start at 4:00 pm and continue approximately every 30 minutes until 7:25 pm.

Group II will meet on Thursday and Friday evenings and Saturday mornings for three weeks. Thursday and Friday evening lessons start at 4:00 pm and continue approximately every 30 minutes until 7:25 pm. Saturday morning lessons start at 9:00 am and continue every 30 minutes until 12:25 pm.

Adult Lessons
Adults, age 16 and older, will be introduced to the water and learn basic skills. All levels of swimming abilities are welcome. The first session will begin: TBA.

Swim Classes
The American Red Cross “Learn to Swim” program teaches aquatic safety skills in a logical progression. The objective is to teach people to swim and to be safe in and around water.
Parent & Me - $30
Parent required in the pool with the child

Tiny Tots - $50
For children 2 to 4 years old

Guppies Level 1 - Water Exploration: $45
Level 1 is an introduction to aquatic skills that helps students feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely.

Eels Level 2 - Primary Skills: $45
Level 2 builds and expands on fundamentals of aquatic and safety skills.

Minnows Level 3 - Stroke Readiness: $45
Level 3 builds on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice.

Dolphins Level 4 - Stroke Development: $45
Level 4 develops confidence in the strokes and improves other aquatic skills.

Sharks Level 5 - Stroke Refinement: $45
Level 5 provides further coordination and refinement of the strokes.

Adaptive - $60
Available upon request. Please see the Pool Manager at the Walnut High School pool office for more information.

Other Aquatic Programs and Classes
Sharks Swim Team
Walnut Sharks Summer Swim Team program is for children ages 6 to 18 who are interested in a competitive swim program.

Lifeguard Camp: Ages 8 to 12
This is a great opportunity for children between the ages of 8 and 12 to learn the basic skills required to be future lifeguards. The camp is challenging and fun while giving youth a chance to learn water safety skills. Cost of class includes guard visor and T-shirt. Requirement: Must have passed or passed the equivalent of City of Walnut Level 4 swim lessons.

Junior Lifeguards Camp: Ages 6 to 12
This training program is designed for those interested in learning how to respond in aquatic emergency. This class serves as a foundation for further training and employment in life guarding and aquatics. This is a great opportunity for those individuals interest in working towards becoming a certified lifeguard. This program includes three weeks of training and one week of shadow work with a certified lifeguard. Camp meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:30 am to 11:00 am for four weeks. Cost class includes a suit and T-shirt.

Water Aerobics
A great workout does not have to just be on land. Water Aerobics offers great cardiovascular exercise that keeps you fit and cool at the same time. This shallow water, low impact workout is sure to make you feel great. No swimming ability is necessary. Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The fee is $40 for each five-week session. Classes are held at the Walnut High School Pool.

Dive in Movie Nights
Movies are not just made for the theater! Bring a raft and sit back and float while watching a flick at the Walnut High School Pool. All participants must bring their own personal rafts or floats. Children under the age of 8 and/or under 48 inches must be accompanied by a parent. Sorry, children under the age of 3 are not permitted. Fee is $2 entry per person and $4 meal ticket. Pool opens at 7:30 pm and will conclude at the end of the movie.
